ADK establishes housing for single mother in Laamu

Location: Male', Maldives       Date: August 19, 2019

ADK General Trading, under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, established housing and fundamental necessities for a single mother of five children, in Hithadhoo, Laamu Atoll.

The family was identified to be without access to basic amenities. Multiple islands were evaluated before the family was selected.

"There were no wardrobes, tables, chairs or beds, shelves, it's only one very old, seemingly a second-hand mattress and three pillows in the house. It was heartbreaking to see the two toddlers sleep on the mattress, being disrupted by ants running over and near them.", said ADK.

Moreover, the family had no access to sanitation. "It was heartbreaking to know that they had to walk to the beach during the day, night, rain or shine."
"We were determined to change their living condition".

The mother Aminath Mohamed, stated that many people take advantage of their impoverished situation. Aminath revealed that she underwent sexual abuse and harassment.

While she has a total of seven children, five children are underage. The eldest two are married and live separate from their mother. They financially support the family by working as fishermen.

Even with the 'Single Parent Allowance' provided by the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), the family struggles to make ends meet.

Following assessments, ADK brought the required materials from capital city Male' and completed the construction within 13 days. The house was completely revamped with new roofing, tiling, furniture, an added lounge area and a toilet.

Furthermore, ADK's initiative convinced Aminath's 13-year-old boy to re-start school. He previously dropped out due to harassment and bullying. ADK also provided necessary items such as stationaries and uniforms.

The company has decided to aid the family for a period of one year.

This marks another successful project in a series of annual CSR initiatives undertaken by ADK. In 2018, the company in partnership with Damas Company Pvt Ltd assisted a family of 12 in Omadhoo, Alif Dhaalu Atoll.
